Ryan and Megan's Chicago Itinerary

Saturday, January 28, 2006 - Sunday, January 29, 2006

Guess what, fool?  Megan and I have yet another trip planned!  Now, don't let the name of this itinerary fool you - you should know our trips better than to think that we are going to stick to a single city!  I just couldn't think of a better name for the trip.  We are flying into Chicago, but are driving up towards Milwaukee - how do you name something like that?  Ryan and Megan's "Northern Mid-West Itinerary"?  Well, I suppose that could work, but it sounds kind of stupid.  So this begs that question - why fly to one of the coldest parts of the country during one of the coldest parts of the year?  Because we never have - and no one in their right minds would!  Unfortunately, this mild winter will only give us temperatures in the mid-30's instead of the single-digit readings I was hoping for... There's always next year, huh?

This time around, we are visiting the Northern Mid-West of the United States (i.e., Illinois and Wisconsin) to add a couple more states to our been-there-done-that catalogue.  Actually - Megan and I have both been to Illinois, so we are only adding one state each, but one is better than none!

All times are local to the particular city.  Our entire trip is going to be in the Central time zone, which is 1 hour behind the Eastern time zone.  No need to get a headache over the numbers, though because I've done the math for you - the times in brackets [] are local to the Eastern time zone.

Itinerary:

Weather Forecast:
One of my original intents on booking a trip to the Northern Mid-West in January was to experience a true Mid-West winter:  fierce winds, tons of snow, and frigid temperatures that result in instant frostbite.  To my dismay, this winter has been far too mild for any of that, and it looks like that trend is going to continue for our trip.  Basically, there is a chance of precipitation on Saturday with highs in the 30's for the weekend.

Note:  The numbers in the itinerary correspond to the map at the bottom.

Saturday, January 28: (forecast)
We are taking Southwest's first flight out to Chicago's Midway Airport [1] (not O'Hare), but probably won't actually be on the road until around 10am, local time (well, that's assuming that Southwest won't crash, like a December flight from BWI to MDW).  From there, we are going to head due West to the outskirts of Chicago, to the Ben Rose Auto Museum.  This is actually private property, but we'll see how close we can get because this is actually Cameron's house [2] from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  The rest of the morning will consist of lots of driving to the North.  We'll take a quick stop at Centegra Health System [3].  This is a large hospital system that I visited in the beginning of December, as part of a software implementation project for CSC.  That will also mark our halfway point to Milwaukee, where we will take a free factory tour of the Miller Brewing Company [4].  After sobering up, we'll do a little bit of driving through the city, perhaps get some Geocaching done, and eventually head back into northern Illinois, where our Marriott hotel [5] will be waiting for us.

Sunday, January 29: (forecast)
Today will be all Chicago, all day.  Most of today will be sightseeing, especially for John Hughes filming locations.  Our first stop will be through the neighbourhood that Ferris Buller ran through at the end of his film [6], followed by Glenbrook North High School [7], where Ferris and his friends "attended" classes, which just so happens to be where The Breakfast Club spent some quality time together.  Then, we'll drive a little closer to Lake Michigan to check out Kevin McCallister's house [8], from Home Alone.  We'll also have to check out United Methodist Church [9] - not to change religions, but just to see where Kevin met up with old man Marley.  From there, we'll follow the coast of Lake Michigan through Dennis the Menace's neighborhood.  After annoying Mr. Wilson, we'll drive into the inner city and pass by the second-oldest baseball park, Wrigley Field [10] and dream of summertime.  However, thinking of hot dogs and nachos is bound to make us hungry, so we'll pop into the Hard Rock Cafe [11] for some early dinner (and I'll of course grab another t-shirt).  If we have time, we'll take a look at the Art Institute of Chicago [12] to check out the same marvellous artwork that Ferris did.  And no trip to the windy city would be complete without visiting one of the tallest buildings in the world - the Sears Tower [13].  Nearby is Harpo Studios, where Oprah does her thang, girlfriend... Jerry Springer does his thing at another nearby studio, as well.  Unfortunately, neither tape on weekends.  Before we know it, it's going to be the evening, and it'll be time to head back to Midway [14] for our flight home.
