Ryan, Megan, Alex, and Katie's Memphis Itinerary
Friday, July 3, 2015 - Monday, July 6, 2015
Howdy! It's another holiday weekend, so I guess that means it's time for another trip! This time we're headed to an airport we've never been to! Memphis! However, we've been to that city a couple times before, so we'll spend about 20 hours in the car, driving across the southeast. Unfortunately, the weather forecast is calling for rain in every destination. Just before we left, we noticed that Southwest had a last-minute sale to sunny Seattle, but that's a bit far for such a short weekend. More importantly, it wouldn't add any new states for Katie. Thus, we'll trudge through a rainy trip (avoiding muddy back roads) and make our way through 6 (!) states (TN, AR, LA, MS, AL, and KY). So, let's put on our blue suede shoes and board the plane - and touch down in the land of the delta blues, in the middle of the pouring rain.
All times are local to the particular city. This trip will take place entirely in the Central Time Zone (1 hour behind Eastern Time).
You know the drill. If we have signal and feel like setting up the webcam, the pictures above will start changing.

Friday, July 3
We start off the day somewhat leisurely, as our wake-and-leave schedule is the same as a routine day at work. However, after our 2-hour flight, things get a bit more hectic, as we have almost 7 hours of driving before we get to our hotel. Our first stop of the day is at the Arkansas Post National Monument. From there, we head to Poverty Point Historic Park in Louisiana. Poverty Point happens to be one of a handful of World Heritage sites in the United States, but there's a high likelihood that we won't arrive until after it's closed. In that case, we'll just look around for dinner. After that, we'll drive by Vicksburg National Park, which is certainly going to be closed by this point. Our hotel for the night is in Jackson, Mississippi - the first time any of us have been to that city (and a year after Southwest Airlines stopped flying there).
Saturday, July 4
Happy Independence Day! Today is another long day of driving, as we head north along the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway. The goal is to get to McFarland Park in Florence, Alabama. There's some outdoor July 4th event there, but if it's raining, that'll be a bit of a bummer. If that's the case, we might just stick around Jackson for a few extra hours. By the evening, we'll end up in Huntsville, Alabama, at a Marriot that is next door to the Space and Rocket Center. Megan and I have been there before (Megan actually went to space camp there). But, this time around we're only showing up for a fireworks display. Hopefully, our room will overlook the fireworks so we can avoid the rain and kids that just want to go to bed.
Sunday, July 5
This is the most laid-back day of the trip. We'll make our way northward to Nashville, stopping by Stones River National Battlefield on the way there. Most of our day will be spent in Nashville, although we don't have any major plans to report, yet. Our hotel is in the heart of the city, so we'll check in and get dinner at Margaritaville, just a couple blocks away on the main strip. And that's it!
Monday, July 6
The only thing to do today is make our 4-hour drive back to Memphis. On the way there, we'll cut a bit north to get a picture by the Kentucky state sign (since we missed that the last time Katie was in that state). If we et to Memphis early enough, we'll get dinner somewhere (Applebee's, perhaps??), and then board our plane back to Baltimore, landing at almost 10pm. That's all folks!
And if that's not good enough, we've still got our guesstimated route highlighted below...
